Church in honour of "Kazanskaya" icon of Mother of God

Kazanskaya church

The church in honor of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God of the city of Izhevsk is an orthodox church, the base of the diocesan Department for education and religious catechetesis of the Izhevsk and Udmurt diocese.

In 1994, after having received a God-given wonderful correction that she had to undertake efforts on the restoration of the grand Saint Michael's Cathedral that had once been standing here, Olga Fedorovna Zorina got a blessing of Archbishop Nicolay. At that time she was a Head of the city trust of bath-and-laundry organization that was located at the foot of the Michailovsky hill.

In the autumn of 1994, by decision of the city authorities, Izhevsk and Udmurt diocese was assigned the land parcel; the Board of trustees was created. Till 1998 the Board of trustees under the guidance of S.V. Chikurov and O.F. Zorina organized excavations for determination of location and conditions of the bases of the cathedral. At the same time the foundation and the basement level of the church in honor of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God were built. However, the means were ended up, and O.F. Zorina organized project protection and its suspension for two years.

The new impulse to the building process was given with a formation of the republican Board of trustees which was under a guidance of Archbishop Nicolay and the President of the Udmurt Republic A.A. Volkov. In 1998 they were set a challenge of the fastest possible completion of the church in order to start reconstruction of the Saint Michael's Cathedral.

Originally the church was planned as a chapel, however, in the course of the design its sizes were increased to the today's ones. Inset stones were delivered from the Izhevsk pond for the construction of the church.

The opening of the temple took place on November 4, 2001.

Now there is a Sunday school and a base of the diocesan Department of education and religious catechetesis in the church in honor of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God. It is the only church in Izhevsk and Udmurt diocese where the liturgies are fulfilled in the Udmurt language on Sundays. Among the most honored sanctities of the church there are particles of relics of the sacred blessed Soldier Feodor (Ushakov) of Sanaksar, Saint Philaret of Moscow and an icon of the Mother of God "Healer".
